Situated in the heart of Kochi, Willingdon Island is one of the largest artificial islands in India. Named after the British Viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon, this island is a marvel of engineering and a testament to human ingenuity. Robert Bristow, the architect behind this artificial island, designed it to its current layout. Presently, the land is jointly managed by the Indian Navy and the Cochin Port Trust. The island was formed using the soil extracted during the deepening of Vembanad Lake to construct the modern Kochi Port. Today, it serves as a critical link between Kochi Port and other international and national seaports, playing a pivotal role in maritime trade.
