Traveling from Delhi to Kashmir by train is a dream for many, but is it currently possible? The answer is—partially. While there is no direct train connecting Delhi to Srinagar, the railway network is expanding, making this journey increasingly feasible in the near future.
At present, travelers can take a train from Delhi to Udhampur, the last major railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. From Udhampur, they must continue their journey via road to Banihal, where the railway network resumes. The Banihal-Baramulla railway line operates within Kashmir, passing through Srinagar.
The Indian Railways is working on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which, once completed, will provide a seamless train connection between Delhi and Srinagar. The most crucial part of this project is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Banihal Tunnel, which will improve connectivity.
Until this project is fully operational, the best way to reach Kashmir by train is to travel to Udhampur or Jammu and then take a road journey to Srinagar. However, in the coming years, a direct train to Kashmir will become a reality, making travel more convenient and scenic.
