The concept of average is something that dominates our regular interactions and transactions. We talk about average batting score of a base ball batter, the national average SAT scores, the average income of the country and so on. In many situations the word average is used in an ambiguous way as the averages can be determined using various methods. In a general sense the average is understood as the center of a distribution or the most typical case of the observations. A numerical measure of this central characteristic is known as a measure of central tendency.
